The single-family homes, duplexes, and triplexes were built in the 800 block of 6th Avenue, after the old Lincoln Homes apartments were torn down.
Galen Westerfield, Chair of the Community Home Partners Board, says the low income housing development breaks the mold by not building a big apartment complex. The 46 new units cost $13.4 million, and he says the entire neighborhood will benefit.
Another board member, Vern Winter, says Community Home Partners is a nonprofit subsidiary of the Rock Island Housing Authority. And its CEO, Susan Anderson is a "Git her done!" kind of leader.
People have already started to move into the new homes and apartments, and rent is based on income. The homes have off-street parking and feature granite countertops, "Energy Star" appliances including a washer and dryer.
Rock Island's Lincoln Homes was built in 1953 and demolished in 2019 to make room for the new development.
