Former Residents of Lincoln Homes Celebrate Childhood

Rock Island's Lincoln Homes will be demolished in the fall and replaced by new homes. Today, several people who grew up in the six-building complex shared what it means to them. And Community Home Partners, the nonprofit branch of the city's housing authority, announced it has received $13 million for the project.

Shellie Moore Guy read from a poem she wrote about the vibrant neighborhood.

Community Home Partners CEO, Susan Anderson, says Lincoln Homes was built in 1953 on 9th Street and 5th Avenue, and it included 37 apartments. One of the six buildings has already been torn down.

To prepare for the new housing development, all the residents moved out in June. Rock Island's new Lincoln Homes will feature 46 rental units, including single family homes and duplexes with one to four bedrooms.

Anderson says demolition should begin in the fall with construction starting early next year. People who had to move out will be the first to be offered the the chance to live in the new development.

The $13 million grant is from the Illinois Housing Development Authority. And the financing includes Low Income Housing Tax Credits.
