A local agency plans to build new apartments and houses in Rock Island after tearing down Lincoln Homes. The Rock Island Housing Authority is asking the Illinois Housing Development Authority for permission to demolish and redevelop the apartments located on 9th Street and 5th Avenue. It also applied for a federal grant.

Spokeswoman, Gail Riggins, says Lincoln Homes were built in 1953. The 37 apartments have never been renovated.

"The folks that live their currently will have the first right to return. The target for that development, the new neighborhood, is going to be working families that are 40-60% AMI, Area Medium Income."

The new development includes plans for 46 townhouses and single family homes.

The Rock Island Housing Authority project will cost $11 to $12 million. And Riggins says the demolition of Lincoln homes and reconstruction will take up to a year and a half.
