Matson Wins in Davenport

Nov 5, 2019

7th Ward Alderman Mike Matson has won the race for mayor of Davenport. Un-official results from Tuesday’s election show he beat 5th Ward Alderman Rita Rawson 59 to 40 per cent.

Polls will be open in Scott County, and across Iowa Tuesday, for the combined city and school elections. For the first time, board of education candidates will be on the same ballot with mayors, city councils, and park boards - previously school board elections were  held separately, in September.

Two candidates are in the race to become the next mayor of Davenport. 7th Ward Alderman Mike Matson and 5th Ward Alderwoman Rita Rawson are running to replace Mayor Frank Klipsch, who has served since 2016 and is not seeking reelection.

The totals are slightly different, but the overall results are the same, after a recount of votes from last week's mayoral primary election in Davenport. Tuesday a hand recount of the ballots ended, advancing Mike Matson and Rita Rawson to the general election next month.

A recount begins on Monday for one of the races from this week's city primary election in Davenport. Thursday afternoon the Scott County Board, first officially certified Tuesday's results, then approved a recount for the mayoral race.

The next mayor of Davenport will be a current member of the city council. In Tuesday’s primary, the two, top vote-getters were Mike Matson from the 7th Ward, and Rita Rawson who represents the 5th Ward. They’ll advance to the general election ballot on November 5th. And one will replace Frank Klipsch who did not run for re-election.

Davenport voters will have a lot of choices on Tuesday in the city primary election, and not just for mayor. Several candidates are running for each of three seats on the city council.
