Flood wall installation at Rock Island's Schwiebert Park

Rock Island is implementing the city's flood plan.

The rising Mississippi River will soon cover sections of the bike path and encroach into Schwiebert and Sunset parks.

Workers are installing pumps and closing gates. That includes water discharge hoses over the bike path, which will be marked. Pedestrians and bicycle riders should look out for them and be careful when crossing them. Some parts of the bike path will also be closed as river levels increase.

A crew is also installing the temporary flood wall at Rock Island's Schwiebert park.

Sunset Drive from 31st Avenue to the park shelter and Skafidas Parkway will be closed today (Friday).

The Sunset Marina fuel dock will also be closed, and pump-out service will be discontinued. Workers will also close the lower road, but they'll install temporary walkways for people to access the boat docks.
