Man who fired nearly 2 dozen shots at an officer will stay in prison

Shaun Taylor
Illinois DOC
Shaun Taylor

Today, the Illinois Supreme Court upheld the conviction and sentence of 42-year-old Shaun Taylor for attempted murder of a police officer.

In 2017, Taylor, from Massachusetts, was pulled over on I-80 near Atkinson but drove away from the traffic stop. He then stopped, got out an AR-15 rifle and handgun, and fired 23 shots at an Illinois State Trooper. The officer was not injured.

Before his trial, a psychiatrist testified Taylor had post traumatic stress disorder but found him fit to stand trial. The supreme court justices agreed with the lower courts that one psychiatric exam was enough. And the enhanced sentence for shooting at an officer was appropriate.

Taylor is serving a 50-year sentence at the Dixon state prison.
