More Grants for Rock Island Businesses

Rock Island wants to help businesses suffering from the pandemic. The city council has approved 292,000 dollars for the second round of Small Business Emergency Response Grants.

Mayor Mike Thoms says 61 businesses in the city received grants from the first round during the summer, totaling 250,000 dollars.

"There was a good chunk of restaurants and bars which is obvious, the one everbody talks about, but there were others besides that. There was a chiropractor, there was a hair salon - so it was a good mix of businesses."
And as the pandemic worsens, it's clear businesses in Rock Island need the extra help. Eligible expenses include rent, mortgages, utilities, insurance, and payroll, among others.

Thoms says applying is easy, using an internet portal named Forward.

"You put in some basic data of your business and it'll tell you - this grant don't qualify for, this one maybe - we need a little more information, this one - you got it. It's a very user friendly platform."

Grants will range from 2,500 to 10,000 dollars.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
