Retired Firefighters Tour Central Fire Station Addition

Retired firefighters in Davenport were treated to breakfast and a tour of the new addition to Central Fire Station. Located downtown, it's the oldest active fire house west of the Mississippi River. The expansion will improve the station's safety and function, while embracing its history.

Fire Chief Lynn Washburn says discussions about renovating the Central Fire Station, built in 1902, have been going on for over thirty years, but the city didn't approve a plan or budget until four years ago. The $15.2 million project will make it much safer and more efficient.

"Everyone loves Central Station for it's history — we truly, truly did," Washburn says. "It was so important for us, but we recognize that to really serve the community, we needed something that's modern and updated. That's what we've been able to do here, and these firefighters are extremely proud of this and are looking forward to showing it off."

Firefighters work shifts up to 24 hours. So Washburn says it's important for them to feel at home, with separate bedrooms, an updated kitchen with individual pantries, and a grill on the patio.

The new fire poles have updated safety features. Drivers won't have to back the big fire trucks into small engine bays anymore. The new garage features lots of space and doors on both third and fourth streets.

Retired firefighter Irving Schlimmer toured the new part of the station. He worked for the Davenport Fire Department from 1958 to 1980.

"All the stations have been updated so great, and the equipment is just awesome," Schlimmer says. "So I wish I was back on the job."

Construction crews should complete the addition within a few months, then finish renovating the old fire station by December.
