Over the next couple of years, Davenport will renovate and expand its Central Fire Station. On Wednesday night, the city council will hold a public hearing about the design plans for the 113-year-old building.

Fire Chief Lynn Washburn says if all goes as planned, a building that was added in the 1940's will be torn down late this spring. Then construction of the addition could begin in mid-summer. One feature of the new building will be drive through bays.
The fire chief also says the new building will shorten "turnout time," or how long it takes firefighters to get ready, get in their trucks, and leave.

The exterior of the existing, two-story fire station will be restored along with architectural elements inside, such as a stairway.

Oval windows trimmed in wood will be kept along with a wood floor on the second story.

The first floor of the station will include storage and maintenance areas, with places for fire boats and grass rigs. The second floor will be fixed up as offices and classrooms for on-site training. One of the brass fire poles will also be preserved.

A new elevator will be installed to make Davenport Central Fire Station handicapped accessible for the first time.

The total cost of the project is $15.2 million.
