The oldest fire station west of the Mississippi River is being expanded and renovated. Today, fire fighters and city officials broke ground at the Central Fire Station in down-town Davenport.
Fire Chief Lynn Washburn says the 114 year old building was originally built for horse-drawn fire wagons. It will be completely remodeled. And even though a later addition will be demolished, she plans to preserve the fire station's history.
Bush Construction will replace the south side of the building with a bigger fire truck bay. The 15.2 million dollar project also includes a new living area for fire fighters upstairs and easier access to equipment.
Washburn says Davenport has been planning to renovate the Central Fire Station for 30 years. Demolition will begin next month, and the whole project should be completed in October 2016.
