Unemployment rate slightly higher in January

The unemployment rate in the Quad Cities was higher in January this year than it was at the same time last year.

In January, the jobless rate was 5.2%, compared to 4.7% in January 2023. In just Rock Island County, it rose one point from 5.4% in January 2023 to 6.4% in January 2024.

Wholesale trade and educational-health services were the sectors with the most growth.

There were roughly 2,300 job losses in professional business services, and 800 in manufacturing, in the Quad Cities over the year.

The unemployment rate reflects the amount of people out of work, who are looking for a job.
