Democrats in Scott County caucused Monday night but didn't vote for presidential candidates.

All 66 precincts met at North High School in Davenport to elect central committee members and delegates, plus discuss regular party business.

Local Democrats, like Rita Vargas, elected central committee members and delegates.

That's because this election year, the Iowa Democratic party's contest is no longer first in the nation. Instead, they'll cast ballots by mail, and the results won't be released until March 5.

Despite the new rules and below zero temperatures, Davenport Democrat Rita Vargas says she was happy with the turn-out.

"Well I've been caucusing since I turned 18 years old, I've never missed a caucus," she said.

"We had a fantastic turn-out here, I haven't gotten my ballot in the mail, but the first day that you could sign up for one, I did exactly that, so I've just been anxiously waiting for that ballot to come in the mail."

Vargas says she'll caucus for President Joe Biden.

"I do have concerns that too many people are making a big deal about his age, age is just a number," she said. "Yeah, I slip once in a while myself, we've all had that happen to us, so I think to criticize somebody for that is ridiculous."

The results of last night's Republican presidential caucuses show Donald Trump received the most votes in Scott County.
