People who want to save the Rock Island County courthouse are offering free beer to anyone who can change their minds. The historic building in the Quad Cities could be demolished depending on a lawsuit.

Michelle O'Neill reports this morning in downtown Rock Island and later in downtown Moline, two advocates for saving the 120-year-old building started a campaign called, "Change My Mind."

Hoping to save them before it's too late, Landmarks Illinois has once again released a list of the Most Endangered Historic Places in the state. And one of them is the Rock Island County Courthouse.

Demolition Delayed Again

Another delay in the possible demolition of the Rock Island County Courthouse, and it could last a while. On Monday, the Third District Appellate Court granted a request by preservationists to extend a temporary restraining order, blocking demolition.

A contractor may soon begin tearing down the Rock Island County courthouse.

This afternoon, Peoria County Judge Jodi Hoos dismissed a lawsuit filed by preservation groups and individuals who want to prevent demolition of the 122-year-old building. 


Rock Island aldermen may ask the county board and Public Building Commission to change their minds about demolishing the courthouse. Tonight's council agenda includes a resolution inviting the board and commission to work with Rock Island to privatize and redevelop the 120-year-old building.

The chief judge of Illinois' 14th Circuit says the Rock Island County Courthouse is a danger to employees and the public. That's why last Friday, Walter Braud issued an administrative order to the Rock Island County Board and its Public Building Commission to demolish it as soon as possible.

Michelle O'Neill reports the process could begin within a couple of weeks, when a contractor completes removing asbestos from the courthouse.

A state office wants Rock Island County to hold off on tearing down the courthouse. 


A local architect wants to block the demolition of the Rock Island County courthouse. Last month, Italo Milani of Rock Island filed a complaint in circuit court. And tomorrow, he'll ask a judge to grant a preliminary injunction.
