Demolition of Old Rock Island Co. Courthouse May Begin Soon

A Peoria County judge and two state agencies have cleared the way for Rock Island County to tear down the old courthouse.

Last week, Peoria County Judge James Mack ruled the need for a temporary restraining order no longer exists. It blocked demolition during a long court battle.

Richard Brunk, the Chair of the Rock Island County Board, says the State Historic Preservation Office and the Illinois EPA approved a process called "recordation." That required the county to document the history of the building, part of a 2020 ruling by the Illinois Third District Appellate Court.

Brunk does not know when demolition might start.
