When the second quarter opens Monday for the Rock Island schools, students will do something they haven't done for 2 1/2 months - physically go to school. Classes have been held remotely for the district's 6,300 students since early August.

More than two months after the school year began, students in the Rock Island district will actually go to school for the first time. Since classes opened in August, students have been attending remotely, but many will report for in-person instruction beginning on Monday.

Students in the Rock Island schools could return to the classroom as early as Oct. 2, depending on the number of COVID-19 cases in the county. Roughly two-thirds of families surveyed are planning to send their kids back to school, at least a couple days a week, with one-third opting to continue remote learning. 

Students in the Rock Island School District will have to stay home and learn remotely for a while longer. On Monday, Superintendent Reginald Lawrence announced the schools will not re-open next week as he had hoped. 

When the new school year opens next month, students in the Rock Island schools will stay home. That was the decision Wednesday night by the school board, based on recommendations from Superintendent Reginald Lawrence.

One of the top administrators for the Milwaukee schools will be the next superintendent for the Rock Island School District. Friday the board of education announced the hiring of Doctor Reginald Lawrence - he will replace Mike Oberhaus who's retiring next summer.
