Remembering Monmouth Coach

Monmouth College

The swim coach at Monmouth College has died, from complications of COVID-19. 62 year old Tom Burek died Saturday.

Burek spent two seasons as assistant coach then became head coach in 2013. Since then his men's and women's teams have won 12 individual Midwest Conference titles and four times qualified for the Division Three swimming and diving championships. And his teams currently hold 37 men's and women's Monmouth records.
A retired master sergeant, Burek served the Illinois State Police for 23 years. He also coached several swim clubs in the region and had assisted other college swim programs.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
