The city of Rock Island will demolish three downtown buildings next month.

The first is the Bear Manufacturing building on Fifth Ave.

Community and Economic Development Director Miles Brainard says the building was abandoned for around 20 years, and is now a danger to the public.

"The city acquired it at tax auction and basically the idea here is to take down a building which is increasingly a danger to the public, starting to experience structural deficiencies and really make available a relatively large site on a prominent thoroughfare for future development."

The other two are the Klass buildings.

"Named after Al Klass, who used to own them back in the day," Brainard says. "They're located at the intersection of First Avenue and 19th Street."

"Very similar story with these, they've been sitting vacant, underutilized, for a long time, starting to collapse in on themselves. One of them had had a fire a few years ago that caused a roof collapse."

The Bear Manufacturing building is set to be demolished first, in early February. The Klass buildings are set to be demolished later the same month.

There will be lane closures on First Ave and 19th St, and Fifth Ave during that time.
