Bettendorf will hire six new firefighters in the next six months.

At the city council meeting earlier this month, the council accepted a FEMA grant for over $2 million dollars. The SAFER grant supports understaffed fire departments.

In a press release, Fire Chief Troy Said said the money will be used to have more firefighters at the Surrey Heights Fire Station 24/7.

It's enough to fund the six new firefighters' base salaries and benefits for three years.
