Scott County Sex Offender Compliance Sweep

A recent check of sex offenders living in Scott County showed that most of them are obeying the law.

Lieutenant Dan Furlong from the Scott County Sheriff's Office says in June officers visited 121 registered sex offenders, and found that 83 were in compliance, while 15 were not. Eight of them were arrested.

"The eight arrests related to having internet identifiers that they didn't register with us, or living at an address that they didn't register with us, or having a roommate they didn't tell us about."

Compliance also includes phone numbers, what vehicles they're driving, and where they're employed or going to school.

Furlong says with 525, Scott County is second only to Polk County for its number of registered sex offenders - the central Iowa county including Des Moines has 950 registered offenders.

The Scott County Sheriff's office has one full-time detective and one full-time civilian position overseeing its sex offender registry. And it tries to hold compliance checks twice a year, with help from the Davenport and Bettendorf police, and the US Marshall's Service.
