Vaccination May Soon Be Required for Davenport School District Employees

Employees of the Davenport School District may soon be required to get vaccinated against COVID-19, or least be tested regularly. Monday night, the board of education is scheduled to discuss new requirements to comply with orders from the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

If approved, the rule would go into effect for teachers and other staff next week ( 1/10 ), and they would have to be fully vaccinated by February 4th.

Anyone not fully vaccinated would have to provide proof of a negative test every week, and they would have to wear a mask whenever they're indoors, in a vehicle, or other enclosed space.

The vaccine requirement does not apply to Davenport school employees who have a valid medical or religious reason for not being vaccinated.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois. While a graduate student in the Public Affairs Reporting Program at the University of Illinois at Springfield (then known as Sangamon State University), he got his first taste of public radio, covering Illinois state government for WUIS. Here in the Quad Cities, Herb worked for WHBF Radio before coming to WVIK in 1987. Herb also produces the weekly public affairs feature Midwest Week – covering the news behind the news by interviewing reporters about the stories they cover.
