The Rock Island County Health Department will host a COVID vaccine clinic for younger children this weekend. A couple of weeks ago, the CDC approved the Pfizer vaccine for 5 to 11-year-olds.

Janet Hill, Chief Operating Officer from the local health department, says the clinic will be held Saturday so children will be fully vaccinated by Christmas day.

"Kids who start the series on November 20th, get their second dose about December 11th, will be fully vaccinated by December 25th."

The vacine for this age group has been available since the first week of November. And Hill says so far, 3.8% of local children ages 5 to 11 are vaccinated.

"This is a vaccine that has been given to millions of Americans and millions more across the world. There've been very few side effects and they're usally mild."

The link to schedule appointments can be found on the Rock Island County Health Department's Facebook page. The optimal time window for kids' second doses is 17 to 42 days from the first.

Pfizer vaccine clinics will continue on Fridays through the end of January, except the day after Thanksgiving.
