A protest against police brutality will be held in downtown Davenport tomorrow. Local residents are invited to bring signs and listen to speakers outside the Davenport Police Department.
One of the organizers is attorney Eric Puryear.
"I've personally handled cases as an attorney where I've seen improper use of force by local police departments, and so there is a local issue with that."
Puryear says they’ll protest police brutality and racism both nationally and locally. As an example, even for non-violent crimes, he says in both Iowa and Illinois, African Americana and other minorities are arrested at higher rates than whites, even though they’re committing them at the same rate.
"I also think that the right place to have a protest against police brutality is the police station. Protests in parks are great, I have nothing against them; I've attended several, but I really like the idea of having the protest take place where the focus should be, and so that's why I picked the police department."
Puryear says all are welcome at the peaceful protest that begins at 4 o’clock tomorrow. Participants are encouraged to wear face masks.
