Not Guilty Plea for Downtown R.I. Shootings

Trial is now set for next month for a Rock Island man charged in connection with shootings in downtown Rock Island, that killed one person and wounded several others.  Tuesday 42 year old Dewaun Berry pleaded not guilty to first degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm.

On August 29th, a fight broke out in the District about 2 am, and six people were wounded including 43 year old Jesse Brand Junior who died. Berry was arrested two days later.

During a preliminary hearing Tuesday a judge found probable cause that he committed the crimes, then his arraignment was held and Berry pleaded not guilty.

His bond is set at five million dollars.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
