Crowded Field in Davenport Primary

Davenport voters will have a lot of choices on Tuesday in the city primary election, and not just for mayor. Several candidates are running for each of three seats on the city council.

Six people are running for mayor, and just two from Tuesday's ballot will advance to the general election in November. They include two aldermen, Mike Matson and Rita Rawson, retired insurance manager Steve Duffy, businessman Dan Portes, an employee of the public works department Dean Weber, and Elizabeth VanCamp who works for the University of Iowa hospitals.

Three people are running to represent the Third Ward, including incumbent Marion Meginnis, the Fourth Ward has four candidates including incumbent Ray Ambrose, and in the 5th ward, voters will choose from a list of six (incumbent not running).

Polls will be open on Tuesday from 7 am until 8 pm.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
