Local residents can honor those who've died from the coronavirus. Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock church bells will ring in the Quad Cities as part of COVID-19 Victims Remembrance Day.
Ken Croken, a member of the Scott County Board, says we can all join in just by stepping outside.
"Ringing a bell or beating a drum or blowing a horn or whatever noise they're able to make to signal concern and solidarity with the more than 200 families across Iowa who have lost someone to this terrible epidemic."
Sponsors include Quad Cities Interfaith, One Human Family, and other organizations.
Croken hopes the event will remind people who've been isolated for many weeks about the importance of community and caring for their neighbors, and continuing to follow the various safety rules about masks and social distancing.
So far health authorities say 23 people from Scott and Rock Island counties have died from the coronavirus. Iowa lists 219 deaths so far, while Illinois lists more than 2,900 deaths.
