Bettendorf Police Officer Cleared after Fatal Shooting

Marianna Bacallao, WVIK News

A Bettendorf police officer who shot and killed a man during a hostage situation at a daycare is returning to duty. After reviewing body camera footage and witness testimony, The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation found that Officer Patrick Mesick used reasonable force when he killed Timothy Clevenger. At the time, the 53-year-old Clevenger was holding a four year old at knife point.

Amy DeVine, First Assistant Scott County Attorney, says Clevenger was the daycare's landlord. Before the Sept. 3 incident, he recorded a 30 minute video expressing frustration with the current political climate and events in his personal life.

"Mr. Clevenger says at one point that justice will be served, and he will be the one to serve it. And later in the video, he also states that innocent people may die."

Besides Clevenger, no one else was injured during the attack.

Officer Mesick will return to duty next week.
