Archbishop Fulton Sheen will be beatified next month.
In a press release, Bishop Daniel Jenky of the Diocese of Peoria says Pope Francis has called for Sheen's beatification on December 21
The ceremony for the El Paso native and early televangelist will be held at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Peoria. It's the same cathedral where he was ordained as a priest in 1919, and where he was interred after his niece won a court battle to move his remains to Peoria from New York City this year.
In the Catholic church, beatification is the first step towards becoming a saint.
