Wait Continues for Rock Island Co. Courthouse Future

It's time to wait again, now that a panel of judges has heard oral arguments about whether Rock Island County and its Public Building Commission may tear down the courthouse.

In Ottawa this morning, three justices from the Third District Appellate Court listened as attorneys presented the positions of historic preservation groups and the county.

Frank Butterfield is the Director of the Springfield office of Landmarks Illinois. It's one of six plaintiffs who claim the county is violating state law by planning to demolish the courthouse.

He says the lawyers also answered substantive questions about how the Illinois State Historic Preservation Resources Act should be interpreted, its language, and definitions.

The plaintiffs' attorney also told the justices that their position aligns with the Illinois DNR and EPA's interpretation of the law, and the plaintiffs are asking the court to uphold it.

The chair of the Rock Island County Board has not yet returned a call from WVIK. And the county administrator says lawyers have advised board members not to discuss the case.

Audio of the oral arguments hearing is also available on the Illinois Courts website HERE
