Construction crews are now building a new facility in downtown Davenport for the Scott County Family YMCA. This month, officials from the YMCA and Russell Construction broke ground on the three-story building in the 600 block of 4th Street, next to the YMCA's existing Early Learning Center.

Frank Klipsch, from the Scott County Family Y, says the existing YMCA on West 2nd Street is 60-years-old and too small. The new building will feature an indoor track, gymnasium, fitness center, community rooms, and two swimming pools.

The Scott County Y currently serves about 6,000 people at its downtown Davenport location. Klipsch says the new building will help it serve an additional 5,000 people. The $12 million facility will be called the R. Richard Bittner YMCA to honor the late Davenport resident and supporter of the YMCA.
