Shooter, Motive Identified in Davenport, Bettendorf Incident

Scott County Jail

An ongoing domestic dispute is apparently the reason for yesterday's shootings in Davenport and Bettendorf. That's according to a press release from the city of Bettendorf identifying the man involved as 40 year old Robert Mayes, from Coal Valley.

Police say he first fired shots in a building that houses a law office and military recruiting center in the 700 block of Kimberly Road in Davenport. Mayes' estranged wife works there and he was looking for her.

He then traveled to a business on Utica Ridge Road in Bettendorf, across from Trinity Medical Center, looking for another man somehow involved in the dispute. Police say Mayes fired more shots there, and when he saw officers arriving, he killed himself.
