25 Years After Americans with Disabilities Act

Illinois/Iowa Center for Independent Living

It's been 25 years since Congress passed legislation prohibiting discrimination of people with disabilities. And tomorrow , the Illinois/Iowa Center for Independent Living in Rock Island will celebrate the anniversary, with food, games, and music.
Education Director Marisa Cantu says the Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA, was passed in 1990, to ensure equal opportunity for people with disabilities. It includes employment, transportation, government services, and commercial facilities.
Since 1988, the Center for Independent Living has been offering people with disabilities information and referral advocacy, independent living skills training, and peer support. It helps about 14-hundred residents in Rock Island, Henry, and Mercer counties in Illinois, and Clinton, Scott, and Muscatine counties in Iowa.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of ADA, there will be a free block party tomorrow, from 11 am to 3 pm, at the Center for Independent Living in Rock Island.
