Unemployment Falls in the Quad Cities

IDES

Unemployment fell in the Quad Cities last month, but not in all industries. Jobs increased for construction and retail, but manufacturing and health services saw the biggest decline.
Overall, the May unemployment rate decreased to 5 percent, from 5.9 percent last year. Spokesman for the Illinois Department of Employment Security, Tom Austin, says the Quad Cities consistently has one of the lower unemployment rates in Illinois.
And it's typical to see a mix of growth and decline in different industries.
While manufacturing saw a decline, leisure-hospitality services increased by 15-hundred jobs.

There were 9,600 unemployed people in the Quad Cities last month. The last time the May rate was equal to or lower than 5 percent was in 2008, when it was 4.5 percent.
