Widening of JD Road Begins

WVIK News
Get used to seeing these along John Deere Road in Moline

Motorists who travel along John Deere Road better prepare themselves for delays and detours. On Thursday a two-year project begins to widen John Deere Road in Moline.

Illinois Department of Transportation Construction Field Engineer, Ryan Hippen, says one lane will be added on each side, along 2 1/2 miles, from I-74 to 70th Street. It's because of heavy traffic along this section.

"It's basically to improve capacity and access, and eliminate delays and backups."

This year, Hippen says the contractor for the project, McCarthy Improvement Company, will add a new lane to the eastbound side of John Deere Road, so traffic will move to the westbound side - there'll be two lanes going in each direction.

Then next year, motorists will use the "new" east bound lanes while a new lane is added to the westbound side. Both years, improvements will also be made to the intersections - on the south side this year and north side next year.

The DOT will hold an open house about the 51 million dollar, two-year project, on March 28th at the Moline Library (3:30-7:30 pm).

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
