Rock Island Man Claims Election Day Problems

Herb Trix, WVIK News

A Rock Island man complained to the county board that he wasn't allowed to register to vote on the day of the Illinois primary. On Monday, Wayne Lyter announced he and nine other people were not allowed to register and vote on March 15.

Lyter, who recently moved from Iowa, thought he had the proper identification with him when he went to register at the King Center in Rock Island, but was turned away. Lyter says he was just doing what he was told.

Lyter was supposed to have a photo ID from Illinois, but had not yet gotten an Illinois driver's license after moving from Iowa.

Rock Island County Clerk Karen Kinney says she her office made every attempt to make voter registration accessible and there was no attempt to surpress anyone's vote.

Without the proper ID, Kinney says Lyter couldn't have registered anyway.

Kinney says 21 people registered and voted successfully on Election Day at the King Center. Of the ten people who claimed to have been turned away from registering, she says Lyter is the only one to have come forward.

Lyter was accompanied by Republican County Board Member Mike Steffen from Moline.

I am currently a senior at Augustana College, majoring in Multimedia Journalism and Mass Communication with a minor in Creative Writing. I serve as the General Manager for WAUG.fm, Augustana's online student radio station and have worked as an intern and DJ at Studstill Media Group. I report on local news for WVIK and am honored and excited to be a part of the news team. I hope to pursue a career in radio broadcasting and an eventual master's degree in English or Communications.
