A non-profit group called Living and Driving While Black wants to hear from anyone in Davenport who believes their civil rights have been violated. The Oak Brook-based foundation will hold a meeting Saturday to discuss workplace discrimination, black-on-black crime, police brutality, and other issues.
Founder and CEO, David Lowery, Jr., says Living and Driving While Black has partnerships with five Chicago law firms to handle its cases. At the meeting, two attorneys will be on hand to listen and take notes as people talk about their experiences.
Davenport resident, Cosby Gibson, says the city's police department employs many excellent and fair officers. But he says Davenport leaders fail to hold "bad cops" accountable.
Gibson says lots of his friends in Davenport, whether black, white, or hispanic, feel they don't have any recourse when faced with discrimination. And he hopes many will go to the meeting Saturday to get help.
Living and Driving While Black's meeting will be held at the Davenport YMCA on West 2nd Street, on Saturday from 3 to 5 pm.
