Galesburg Considers Stormwater Utility

Residents and businesses in Galesburg may soon start paying a new fee. Monday night the city council will discuss setting up a stormwater utility.

Director of Public Works, Larry Cox, says a separate fee would help the city repair and maintain its stormwater system, and prevent flooding in some parts of Galesburg.
The proposed fee is 4-dollars and 35 cents per month for single family homes in Galesburg. Commercial and industrial property owners would pay, based on the amount of "impervious area" they have, such as parking lots and buildings.

And if the fee is not approved, Cox says the council may have to cut next year's budget by as much as 400,000 dollars.

The city's new fiscal year begins on January lst.
