Drive Through Meals Sites for Bettendorf Students

While classes are closed because of the pandemic, the Bettendorf School District has started handing out meals at two sites. The drive through service is open Monday through Friday, from 11:30 am until 1 pm, at Bettendorf Middle School and Neil Armstrong Elementary.

Director of Nutrition Services, Kayla Leu, says they're handing out lunches, and breakfasts for the next day.

"No one really knows how long the closure will go on. As of right now our plan is to get back to school April 13th - we'll continue to provide meals up until that point. If for some reason we don't, we'll continue to do what we need to do to make sure students have those meals they're relying on."

Leu says they handed out about 400 meals during each of the first two days.

At each site, from four to eight people are working in the kitchen, with counselors, outreach workers, and others handing out the food to those who drive through.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
