Carl Sandburg College Celebrates 50 Years

Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg is celebrating a major milestone this weekend. Friday and Saturday, the college will hold several events to commemorate its 50th Anniversary.

College President, Lori Sundberg, says Friday marks the exact date of a special election 50 years ago, when voters agreed to establish a community college district in Knox and Warren counties.

Now, the district covers 10 counties and 3,000 square miles.
When Carl Sandburg was founded in 1966, the college had no permanent facilities, and held classes all over town. Sundberg says since then, it's added a branch campus in Carthage. And it has more career tech and health programs than most community colleges its size.

They now also have programs for kids and seniors, and corporate training, making Carl Sandburg a "true community college."

Even with the excitement surrounding Carl Sandburg's 50th Anniversary, Sundberg says it's difficult to plan for the future, considering the budget crisis in Illinois.

She says most community colleges are putting plans on hold because of the budget crisis.

Carl Sandburg's 50th Anniversary Celebration begins Friday with a showing of the movie "Finding Dory," at 7 pm, at the Galesburg campus. Events Saturday include an open house, a retiree reception, and a family picnic.
