The number of COVID-19 cases in the Quad Cities is approaching 30,000 with today's total at 29,924 (12,879 in Rock Island County and 17,045 in Scott County). The number of COVID-19 deaths has reached 514 with 304 in Rock Island County and 210 in Scott County.
As the bar graph above shows, February's COVID-19 statistics are similar to those recorded in August in the Quad Cities.
Today's 7-day moving average test positivity rate reported by each state's public health department is 3.0% in Rock Island County.
And it's 3.4% in Scott County. (Reminder: the statistic dropped artificially after Feb. 18th, when the Iowa Dept. of Public Health changed its calculation from total individual tested to total tests.)
The number of confirmed and active cases of COVID-19 at the East Moline Correctional Center has increased to 47, with 44 inmates infected and 3 staff.
Four prisoners died last fall, but no other COVID-19 deaths have been reported at the East Moline prison since then.
The number of daily deaths reported in the Quad Cities has decreased since November, December, and January.
Overall test positivity rates are flattening in Scott County and gradually decreasing in Rock Island County.
Here's a look at the latest statistics about Rock Island County long term care centers from the Illinois Dept. of Public Health. Currently, 119 cases are "open" or active.

The number of COVID-19 deaths in the Quad Cities has reached 506, with 304 in Rock Island County and 202 in Scott County. The number of confirmed cases is 29,707, with 12,792 in Rock Island County and 16,915 in Scott County.
Today's 7-day moving average test positivity rate reported by each state's public health department is 4.0% in Rock Island County and 3.8% in Scott County.
On Feb. 18th, the Iowa Department of Public Health changed the way it calculates the test positivity rate. Instead of individuals with positive results, it now reflects all tests completed with positive results. You can see the artificial drop in the percentage (light green, vertical line) in the graph below.
A state agency says 26 new, confirmed cases of COVID-19 are reported at the East Moline Correctional Center. Today, the Illinois Department of Corrections reports a total of 37 inmates have active infections, compared to last week's 11 active cases. Five staff members have active infections today, compared to six last week.
The confirmed case total at the East Moline prison since the pandemic began is 460 (4% of Rock Island County's total), with 383 infections among prisoners. The rest, 77 cases, were staff members. Four inmates died of COVID-19 last fall.

The number of COVID-19 deaths in the Quad Cities is 477, with 295 in Rock Island County and 183 in Scott County. The number of cases is 28,693, with 12,322 in Rock Island County and 16,371 in Scott County. The overall test positivity rate in Rock Island County is 8.5% while in Scott County it's 21.3%.
Today's 7-day moving average test positivity rate reported by each state's public health department is 5.6% in Rock Island County and 9.7% in Scott County.

Four additional COVID-19 deaths have been reported in the Quad Cities with 170 more confirmed cases. That brings the totals to 460 deaths and 27,622 cases.
According to the Iowa Department of Public Health reports four deaths of Scott County residents for a total of 171. The county's case total is now 15,710 with 24 residents in the hospital. Today, the county's seven-day moving average test positivity rate (TPR) for individuals is 10.3%.
To help put positivity trends in context, Scott County's 14-day moving average TPR for individuals is now 11.9% compared to 13.6% one month ago (12/22/2020) and 24.8% two months ago (11/22/2020).
Here's a look at the beginning of the vaccination process in Scott County.
Rock Island County reports no deaths today, so its total is 290. Sixty new confirmed cases have been identified for a total of 11,912, and 27 Rock Island County residents are in the hospital being treated for COVID-19. The seven-day rolling average test positivity rate in the county is 6.4%. For comparison, one month ago, that rate was 11.0%, and 18.6% two months ago (12/22/202 and 11/22/2020).
Vaccination data is also available for Rock Island County.
The state also tracks COVID-19 in public schools.

After three days with no COVID-19 deaths reported in the Quad Cities, the county health departments report eight more people have died. As in the past, the timing of the reports may have been affected by the federal holiday. Quad Cities deaths now total 454 with 27,312 confirmed cases.
The Rock Island County Health Dept. reports 5 deaths today for a total of 289. More than 60% of the deaths are residents of long term care centers.
The health department also reports 58 new, confirmed cases for a total case count of 11,805. Thirty-two Rock Island County residents are in the hospital with the coronavirus infection.
In Scott County, the Iowa Department of Public Health reports three deaths of county residents, for a total of 166. The case count in Scott County is up by 67 to 15,507. About 20 Scott County residents are in the hospital with COVID-19.
The seven-day rolling average test positivity rate in Rock Island County is 5.7%. And in Scott County, the Iowa DPH reports the seven-day moving average test positivity rate for individuals is 10.4%.

The number of COVID-19 deaths in the Quad Cities has reached 443, with 282 of them Rock Island County residents and 161 Scott County residents. The number of confirmed cases is now 26,836, with 11,583 in Rock Island County and 15,253 in Scott County.
In Rock Island County, 38 residents are in the hospital with the coronavirus infection. And in Scott County, there are 28.
Test positivity rates are dramatically lower compared to mid-November. See charts below for more details.

The latest statistics about COVID-19 in Rock Island County long term care centers is shown below. The number of "open" cases is 992 over the last month. That's 77% of the total since the pandemic began (1,296).
Iowa does not provide similar data for Scott County. The Iowa DPH COVID-19 website currently shows one facility, Ridgecrest Village, has had 22 cases with 14 recoveries in the last two weeks. That means eight cases are "active" (similar to "open" in Illinois).

As of Sunday, the total number of Quad Cities COVID-19 cases is 26,302 (11,341 in Rock Island Co., 14,961 in Scott Co.) with 431 deaths (276 in Rock Island Co., 155 in Scott Co.). 
The table below shows the numbers of confirmed COVID-19 cases and deaths per month in 2020 plus case fatality rates and recovery rates as reported by county and state health departments. (Case fatality is useful to track trends but is a poor measure of infection mortality, according to the CDC.)

In Rock Island County, 60% of COVID-19 deaths have been long term care residents, but only 11% of the county's confirmed cases have been at those facilities.

As the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases decreases, the number of Quad Cities residents dying of the disease is rising. This trend began in November with a dramatically increase in the monthly case count (10,013, Rock Island and Scott counties combined) followed in December by a 50% drop (5,008).
For November, the case fatality rate (CFR) was 0.88%. (CFR is the proportion of the number of deaths divided by the number of confirmed patients.) For December, the case fatality rate increased to 3.47%, or nearly four times higher than November.

The Rock Island County Health Department reports 12 more residents have died, bringing the total to 243. It's the highest number of COVID-19 deaths reported on one day, but it's also probably because of delayed reporting over Christmas and the weekend. Rock Island County's case count is now 10,653.
The Scott County Health Department reports a total of 147 COVID-19. Scott County's case count has reached 13,824.
The total number of COVID-19 deaths in the Quad Cities (both counties) is now 390, and the case count is 24,477. To put those number is context, so far in December, 156 Quad Cities residents have died of COVID-19. That's nearly twice as many as November when 88 died. But the number of positive cases reported this month has dropped to 4,565, less than half the 10,013 cases reported in November.

With half of December over, the number COVID-19 deaths in the Quad Cities this month has exceeded the number who died in all of November. Last month, the Rock Island County and Scott County health departments reported 88 residents died from the coronavirus infection. As of Tuesday afternoon, 91 have died in December.
The number of deaths since the pandemic began is 325, with 120 in Scott County and 205 in Rock Island County.
In recent weeks, the number of Rock Island County residents in the hospital with COVID-19 has been in the 60's and 70's, after peaking in November at 92. Today, 58 Rock Island County residents are in the hospital with the infection. (Iowa does not provide county level hospitalization statistics.)
The number of cases in the Quad Cities is approaching 23,000 (22,843). Scott County's seven-day moving average test positivity rate is 12.4% percent, while Rock Island County's seven-day rolling average is 14.4%.

The number of positive COVID-19 cases in the Quad Cities will be more than 22,000 before the end of the day. And the number of deaths will be at or slightly higher higher than 300.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in the Quad Cities has reached 19,739. And a total of 234 local residents have died of the disease caused by the coronavirus. In Rock Island County, 68 residents are in the hospital with COVID-19.
(Iowa doesn't report hospitalizations by county.)
Rock Island County's test positivity rate is 16.3%. That's a 7-day rolling average (see line graph, left). Since Nov. 20th, Illinois has been under tier 3 mitigations. More information is HERE.

The number of COVID-19 cases and deaths continues to rise in the US, Illinois, Iowa, and the Quad Cities. To give more context, the second slide in the slide show above features a line graph with two axes plotted over the same timeframe. Keep in mind they are not to scale or equalized by using figures per 100,000 population. (In other words, the numbers should not be compared by how high they are in relation to one another.)
You may compare cases vs. deaths by increases and decreases. For example, did an increase in case numbers over the Fourth of July result in an similar increase in deaths a few weeks later?
The third slide also features a secondary axis, so the same caution applies. It's monthly cases and deaths reported in the Quad Cities.

In the graph below, the light green line shows the number of Scott County COVID-19 cases is slightly higher at 3,477 compared to the number in Rock Island County, 3,415.
Since the pandemic began, Scott County's numbers have trended slightly lower than Rock Island County's.
But for the past eight days, it's reversed.
Over several months, Scott County's overall positive test rate has been slowly rising compared to Rock Island County's which has been flat to increasing slightly (see graph below).
