Help for Iowa Arts Groups to Survive the Pandemic

Arts and cultural organizations in eastern Iowa are among those that'll receive some welcome help from the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs. Wednesday it announced grants totaling 1.1 million dollars for relief during the pandemic, with the money coming from the federal CARES Act.

Chris Kramer is Director of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs.
“Many of these organizations are looking at a nine to 12-month recovery period. They’re just trying to keep their doors open and continue to provide programming in a relevant way, while they’re at a reduced operational mode.”

Local grant winners include Ballet Quad Cities, the Figge Art Museum, New Ground Theater, and the Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Society.

Other recipients include the Clinton Symphony and Sawmill Museum, the Ohnward Fine Arts Center in Maquoketa and Muscatine Arts Center, and several organizations in Dubuque - the symphony, arts council, and Grand Opera House.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
