Rock Island Approves Police-Community Relations Commission

Rock Island Police Department

A new group in Rock Island is designed to improve relations between residents and the police department.

Last month, the City Council approved the 12 members of the Rock Island Police Community Relations Commission.

The commission will review police activities and complaints, and provide recommendations to city officials and police leadership.

Mayor Mike Thoms says the members of the commission have a variety of backgrounds and professions.

"For example, one is an attorney. Another one is a trauma expert. Another one is somebody that has returned to the community and/or a convicted felon."

Thoms says its members will work as liaisons between the community and law enforcement.

"The goal is to, you know, basically, go into the neighborhoods or areas and get an understanding of what the tensions are, and try to get better communications between the police department and that part of the community."

The commission was proposed by former mayoral candidate Thurgood Brooks in May, and it was formally created in August. Its members will meet soon to iron out procedures and leadership.
