A long career with the Rock Island Police Department is about to end. on Wednesday, Chief Jeff VenHuizen announced he will retire at the end of the month.

He started as a patrol officer 28 years ago, in 1993, and since then has held a variety of positions in the department, becoming chief in 2012.

As chief, VenHuizen has overseen several major projects, including building the new police headquarters, upgrading the old radio system, and starting one of the first body camera programs in the Quad Cities.

In his announcement, he says at the beginning of the year he began exploring "future opportunities," but did not mention any possible future plans.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
