Project NOW has extended hours at its emergency warming shelter in downtown Rock Island due to the extreme cold weather.

The Lift NOW Center on 19th Street is open again for 24 hours today.

Director of Mission Effectiveness and Agency Expansion Ron Lund says Sunday, Jan. 19, was the shelter’s busiest night, with 22 residents. The shelter can house up to 37 people.

“15 men, 7 women. Thankfully, we have not seen any families with children yet," Lund said. "Obviously, our goal is to not have children in the shelter if we can help from it.”

Christian Care is providing showers and meals. Lund says the shelter will be accepting donations once normal hours resume on Tuesday, Jan. 21, open from 9 pm to 7 am. He says they are also in need of volunteers.

“Our biggest demand right now is coffee cups, paper cups, or styrofoam, preferably just so we don’t have to deal with washing and things like that," Lund said.

Volunteers must be eighteen or older. The extended shelter hours were funded by the Rock Island County Board.
