Starting this month, the BISSELL Pet Foundation is sponsoring the “Empty the Shelters” event. Empty the Shelters is a national adoption event where people can adopt fully fixed, spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped pets for fifty dollars or less.
To adopt a cat, there is an application process. To adopt a dog, a member of the behavioral team will help find the best dog based on needs.
Celina Rippel, development manager for the Humane Society of Scott County says that there are many adoptable pets. "Of course we want people to come and adopt. We have so many animals in our care right now. The Quad Cities in general has quite the pet overpopulation issue. I mean, you will see all the local shelters are struggling quite a bit with it."
There are 360 participating locations. Local locations include the Humane Society of Scott County, Boone Area Humane Society, Cedar Valley Humane Society, Des Moines County Humane Society, Humane Society of Northeast Iowa, Midlands Humane Society, PAWS and More, and Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter.
The Humane Society of Scotts County has over a hundred dogs and 300 cats at the shelter.
The event runs until October 15th. For more information or to see the pets currently in the shelter, go to HSSC.us.
BISSELL is a company that produces pet cleaning supplies.
