During this summer, the Figge Art Museum will be hosting the Walter Wick: Hidden Wonders exhibition. The traveling collection is an in-depth look at Wick's work, including the photos behind I Spy, landscape photography, and studio photography.
The photos follow different themes including Miniature Worlds, I Spy Games, Floor Games, Wonders of Science, Craft- Built Worlds, Optical Illusions, Puzzle Challenges, Connecticut Woods, and Curiosity Shop.
Wick’s favorite piece in the Hidden Wonders collection is a part of his new work, Curiosity Shop. It’s a series of nine photographs that take you through vintage objects.
He is celebrating over 50 years of work and has published more than 26 different children's books. Wick started as a landscape photographer, switching to studio photography early in his career when he got a job at a commercial photography studio. He has since used different techniques, including mirrors and long exposures, to create his different worlds within the four walls.
Wick says that the exhibition is a blast to walk through. “You walk into these galleries and you’re just going to feel like you’re just hit with a sense of wonder.”
On July 18th, Wick will talk to guests at the museum about his childhood, inspiration, and behind-the-scenes of the books. On July 25th, a highlights tour of the exhibition will be hosted. The exhibition will be at the Figge until November 17th.
