River Action, an organization based in Davenport, is asking residents for help protecting migrating birds.

Tonight, River Action will turn off the Centennial Bridge lights at 11 p.m. to protect birds that migrate at night.

According to officials, as many as 28,000 birds will fly through the Quad Cities area today and tomorrow, with an estimated 16,000 to 28,000 flying through on Wednesday.

The Centennial lights will also be turned off at 11 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday.

River Action says bright lights can attract and disorient nocturnally migrating birds, throwing them off of their flight path or even causing fatal collisions.

The organization is asking residents to turn off all non-essential lighting during migration days from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.

For more information about the Centennial Bridge lights, residents can call 563-322-2969.
