Residents of the Quad Cities can enjoy homegrown produce and handmade foods from local farmers markets, starting this weekend.

This Saturday marks the season's opening of the Q-C Farmers' Market in downtown Rock Island and the Freight House Farmers Market in Davenport.

The markets will feature a variety of locally made goods, such as baked foods and personal care products.

Missy Carter, executive director of the Freight House Farmers Market, says this year, the Davenport market will have a shuttle to help transport customers from the parking lot.

"So we have a six passenger golf cart that we are going to drive around to the satellite parking lots," Carter said. "Because our market is so large, we wanted to be able to bring them closer to not have that parking be such a stressful issue."

Both markets accept SNAP and are part of the "double-up bucks program." Ian Forslund is president of the Q-C Farmers' Market.

"For every dollar that they spend on the SNAP card, we give them a dollar token, and we also give them a dollar coupons for fruits and vegetables," Forslund said. "So, essentially, people are able to double their SNAP benefits by coming to markets."

Starting this weekend, both markets will be open Saturday mornings and the Davenport market will also be open on Sunday.
