The Diocese of Davenport has reinstated a priest accused of sexually abusing a child.

Reverend John Stack was removed from the ministry last year after the diocese received a report of "inappropriate conduct with a minor" by Stack in the 1990s.

In a statement, the diocese says it reported the accusations to the Scott County Attorney. The case was also sent to the Dicastery for the Doctrine of Faith in Rome. That's the part of the Catholic Church's central government that deals with cases of abuse by clergy.

Stack was removed from the ministry in 2013 for similar accusations and was investigated by the Vatican then too. A non-legal trial found that those sexual abuse allegations were "not proven" and Stack was reinstated in 2016.

The Diocese of Davenport says its administrator, Kenneth Kuntz, got a response from the Vatican in December "entrusting the matter to his pastoral governance." Kuntz restored Stack to the ministry.

The statement says Stack will assist priests who are ill or on vacation. And that the diocese "apologizes for all those who have been abused and continues to pray for them."
