Starting next week, drivers turning onto John Deere Road from 41st Street will not be able to turn right on red.
The city says a traffic review showed a high rate of rear-end crashes in the turn lanes at that intersection. Police have seen a 140% increase in crashes there since 2018. In the last two years, there have been over 150 crashes, 42% of which happened in the east turn lane of northbound 41st Street.
At the end of last year, the city brought its review and recommendations to the Illinois Department of Transportation, who has jurisdiction over John Deere Road. With the go-ahead from I-DOT, the city will add signs at the intersection, officially prohibiting right turns at both red lights next Monday.
The traffic engineering department also set up enhanced traffic detection systems and prepared the light patterns to respond to long lines in the turn lanes.
