USPS holds public hearing on Quad Cities facility changes

A plan to modernize the United States Postal Service may include moving some operations away from its Quad Cities distribution center.

Last month, the postal service conducted a review of the processing and distribution facility in Milan.

In its initial findings document released last week, the postal service says the results support turning the Milan facility into a "local processing center." It would only process certain kinds of mail, and the rest, including outgoing mail, would go to a processing and distribution center in Des Moines.

It's part of a $40-billion plan to make the national postal network cheaper and more efficient.

The proposed changes also include around $6-million in facility improvements. The postal service says the changes do not include any "career employee layoffs."

Tuesday at noon, the USPS will hold a public meeting for feedback on the plan at The Camden Centre in Milan. People can also submit comments online until Feb. 21.
